Seymour Holtzman

Seymour Holtzman, a remarkable entrepreneur and philanthropist, was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, to Max and Bella Holtzman (née Spivak). He passed away on May 28 at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of optimism, ambition, and success.

Seymour was a spirited individual, described by his loving wife, Evelyn (Evie) Holtzman, as an eternal optimist who lived life to the fullest. The couple shared 67 wonderful years together, and Evie fondly recalled a poem she wrote for Seymour in 1957, capturing his zest for life and diverse interests.

Starting from humble beginnings, Seymour’s entrepreneurial journey began at a young age, listing his first company on the New York Stock Exchange at 32. Over his lifetime, he grew, acquired, and turned around more than a dozen businesses in publishing, retail, jewelry manufacturing, banking, and men’s clothing. Notably, he was the president and CEO of Jewelcor Inc., a chain of retail stores, and the owner of C.D. Peacock Inc., a historic Chicago jewelry establishment.

Seymour’s business ventures extended globally, pioneering investments in Central and Eastern Europe before the collapse of the Berlin Wall. His influence reached political realms as well, serving as the national finance co-chairman for the Reagan-Bush campaign and advising on trade policy matters.

A flamboyant dresser and avid sportsman, Seymour also had a passion for motorcycles and was a former dance instructor at Arthur Murray. He managed public companies for over 40 years, featured in prestigious publications such as Forbes, Business Week, and The Wall Street Journal.

His philanthropy was widely recognized; he was honored as Humanitarian of the Year by the Cardinal Cushing School and Training Center and Man of the Year by the B’nai B’rith Youth Services. Seymour was also deeply connected to his alma mater, Wilkes University, serving as a Trustee and receiving an honorary doctorate in 2015. The Holtzman Family Scholarship continues to support Wilkes students in need.

Seymour is survived by his wife Evie; his sons Marc (Kristen) and Steven (Qi); his daughter Allison; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is remembered for his strong character, generosity, and the countless lives he impacted positively.

Seymour Holtzman lived a life full of ambition, love, and generosity, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire and impact many.

Seymour and Evie were always a team. The best! I enjoyed their hospitality both in Wilkes Barre and Palm Beach. Seymour lived life large. Seymour was proud of his family - raised great and savvy sons. His immediate family - Mark, Stephen and Allison, were a testament and continuation of his life. Seymour's political and business affiliations were a reflection of his life's priorities. I first met Seymour through common friends, Marvin Roth and Claire Rosenberg. Like the works of art he invested - his life and how he dressed and carried himself was a valuable canvas of life - full of life and color - masterful and memorable.
